About the Course

Prepare yourself and/or your organisation for the future of work with the AI Literacy and Upskilling Course, designed specifically for the general workforce in Malta (non-technical roles).

Why This Course is Essential

This essential 6 hour course is structured to build foundational AI literacy. It is strategically aligned with the EU AI Act, to help staff build a sufficient level of understanding regarding AI systems. The core objective is to empower employees and self-employed individuals to use AI tools productively, ethically, and safely in their work.

What You Will Learn

Participants will gain the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to interact confidently and responsibly with AI systems, moving beyond the hype to understand the capabilities and limitations of technologies like Generative AI.

The training covers three critical areas:

  1. Practical Application: Participants learn to apply foundational skills for engaging and creating with AI. This includes understanding the process by which an AI system learns and mastering basic prompt engineering to effectively communicate their vision to AI systems. They will also learn a simple decision framework for identifying tasks suitable for automation (for efficiency) or augmentation (as a "thinking partner").

  2. Critical Evaluation: Participants will develop the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated content. Since Generative AI can produce content that seems factual but is incorrect or fabricated ("hallucinations"), participants are taught practical evaluation techniques and the necessity of adopting a healthy scepticism to verify outputs.

  3. Responsible Use: The course provides instruction on how to manage AI systems responsibly, stressing key ethical principles like fairness and accountability. It reinforces that human judgment and oversight must remain central to decisions that have ethical implications.

Finally, the course situates AI within the EU AI Skills Strategy, preparing the workforce for a future where AI automates routine tasks, increasing the importance of uniquely human skills such as creativity, judgment, and empathy.

Benefits For Organisations (Compliance)
Benefits For Individuals (Career Advancement)

Improve Awareness: Focuses on the need for a "sufficient level of AI literacy" for all staff dealing with AI.

Improve Fluency in AI: Learn the ability to work effectively, efficiently, and safely with emerging AI technologies, which is essential for maintaining employability.

Mitigate High-Risk Scenarios: Staff learn to critically evaluate AI output for factual errors and biases, helping your organisation avoid harm caused by misinformation or "hallucinations".

Master High-Value Skills: Gain expertise in practical skills like prompt engineering and applying frameworks for delegating tasks to AI efficiently.

Ensure Ethical Deployment: The course covers legal and ethical aspects, ensuring staff understand the necessity of human judgment and oversight in AI-assisted decisions.

Increase Your Value: As AI automates routine tasks, you will enhance the unique human skills (creativity, empathy, judgment) that employers increasingly demand.

Learning Outcomes

MODULE 1: AI in Our World – The 'Why'

This module ensures participants can define Artificial Intelligence (AI) and understand its foundational legal context.

Foundational Knowledge and Legal Context:

You will learn a clear, non-technical definition of AI, distinguishing it from hype, and explore different types of AI systems, such as Narrow AI and Generative AI (including tools like ChatGPT). Crucially, this module explains the legal obligation for AI literacy under Article 4 of the EU AI Act, defining AI literacy as the necessary skills and knowledge to make informed, responsible deployments of AI systems. You will also identify the primary opportunities (like automating routine tasks and augmenting human roles) and crucial risks (such as misinformation, "hallucinations," and bias) associated with AI in a business context.

MODULE 2: Thinking Critically with AI – The 'What'

This module equips participants to critically evaluate AI-generated content and practise responsible use.

Critical Evaluation and Ethical Use:

You will gain insight into how AI systems "learn," specifically focusing on the central role of training data and why this process can embed and amplify societal biases. You will develop the ability to critically evaluate AI outputs for accuracy, relevance, and bias using simple techniques (Don't Trust, Verify). Furthermore, we will cover the responsible and ethical use of AI, reinforcing the necessity of human oversight and judgment in AI-assisted work, ensuring the human remains in control of decisions with ethical implications.

MODULE 3: Working with AI – The 'How'

This module provides participants with practical skills for successful collaboration with AI tools.

Practical Application and Prompt Engineering:

You will learn to view AI as a professional partner, understanding two key modes of interaction: Automation (for repetitive tasks) and Augmentation (where AI acts as a "thinking partner" to enhance creativity). You will develop a simple decision framework to identify when and how to use AI effectively, and when human intervention is required (e.g., tasks requiring empathy or high-stakes judgment). Finally, you will master description, often called "prompt engineering," by learning a simple, memorable structure (Role, Task, Context, Constraints) for writing clear, effective instructions to generate useful outputs from AI systems.

MODULE 4: AI and Our Future – The 'What's Next'

This module focuses on lifelong learning and positioning the participant for future success in an AI-driven economy.

Future Skills and Continuous Development:

You will understand how AI is reshaping, rather than simply replacing, jobs, by automating tasks and simultaneously increasing the value of uniquely human skills like emotional intelligence, judgment, creativity, and leadership. The module defines AI Fluency as the ability to work effectively, efficiently, and ethically with Human-AI interaction modalities, viewing this course as the essential first step in a commitment to lifelong learning. Finally, you will identify practical strategies for ongoing skill development, situate this training within the broader EU AI Skills Strategy, and complete a personal action plan for continuous growth.
